Journalists of Russia still in the zone of conflicts

Glasnost Defense Foundation has published data about the fixed conflicts connected with journalists and mass-media in Russia in 2010. The analysis of the facts shows: «the last year hasn't brought appreciable improvements or deterioration in position of Russian mass media and journalists - it practically hasn't changed» (GDF). We give here the review of the data with sample of the facts about mass-media of the Northwest of Russia.


Heads of different level still promised to punish those who interferes with free work of the press, however pressure upon journalists and mass media doesn't weaken. Attacks on journalists and the editions occurring everywhere and constantly, criminal prosecution of journalists, threats, censorship, detention of correspondents during their execution of professional duties. Speaking about the most appreciable tendencies it is necessary to allocate this way of preventing journalists' work — the number of them detained whole covering street actions has considerably increased. Besides, journalists — and editors in particular — get more often to be dismisseed. Another unpleasant process also proceeds — mass-media continue to be closed. It is not as frequent as in 2009 but all the same: the number of closed editions is great enough.

In total the passed year counts 1 590 conflicts (in 2009 — 1537, in 2008 — 1450, in 2007 — 1502, in 2006 — 1345). Journalists' death — 12. In 2009 - 9 journalists, in 2008 - 5, 2007 - 8, in 2006 — 9 cases were fixed.

Attacks on journalists — 58. Among them: Vasily Kanev, the correspondent of TV channel «Komi GOR», Syktyvkar, Yury Nikiforov, the operator of TV channel «Komi GOR», Pavel Budnikov, journalist ГТРК "Kaliningrad", Pavel Netupsky, the correspondent of the Internet newspaper «Fontanka. Ру» (St.-Petersburg), Ivan Ljah, the non-staff correspondent of the newspaper «Law Territory» (Murmansk), Alexander Afanasev, the press photographer of the newspaper «My area» (St.-Petersburg), Kiril Zatrutin, the press photographer, news agency BnKomi (Republic Komi), Alexey Andronikov, newspaper «Student's truth» (St.-Petersburg), Konstantin Rozhkov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Svetlogore", (Kaliningrad). In 2009 - 59, in 2008 - 69, in 2007 - 75, in 2006 — 69.

Attacks on editions — 8, among them: Company TV BASS, Kaliningrad region. In 2009 - 10, in 2008 - 7, in 2007 - 11, in 2006 — 12.

Censorship attempts — 29. Among them: newspaper «Vecherny Murmansk», Channel 5, St.-Petersburg; Website «Vesty Karelii», mass-media of Karelia. In 2009 - 33, in 2008 - 21, in 2007 - 33, in 2006 — 28.

Criminal prosecution of journalists and mass-media — 45. In 2009 - 37, in 2008 - 47, in 2007 - 46, in 2006 — 48.

Dismissal of an editor, a journalist — 31. Among them: Maxim Tikhonov, editor of the Publishing house "Karelia", Alexey Makarov, director of TV and Radio Company "Sampo" (Karelia), Yury Shabanov, director general of the broadcasting company "Petronet" (Karelia). In 2009 - 15, in 2008 - 13, in 2007 12, in 2006 — 16.

Journalists detained by militia (FSB, etc.) - 90. Among them: film crew of the state broadcastiong company "Kaliningrad" (Kaliningrad region), Rostislav Koshelev, press photographer of "BaltInfo", Alexander Afanasev, press photographer of the newspaper «My area», Michael Obozov, press photographer of the newspaper "European", all - St.-Petersburg; Andrey Lebedev, editor of the newspaper «Voice of Shenkurska» (Arkhangelsk region), Gleb Krampets, journalist, the expert in public relations, St.-Petersburg; Sergey Sorokin, Andrey Shopsha and Konstantin Bashlykov, journalists of the newspaper «Krasnoe Znamya», all - Republic Komi; Natalia Belogrudova, editor of the newspaper «Business Petersburg», (St.-Petersburg); Veronica Gorbacheva, journalist of the newspaper «Rubezh Severa» (Republic Komi); Alexander Bogdanov, freelancer, St.-Petersburg; Konstantin Rozhkov, editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Svetlogore", Kaliningrad; Elena Popova, press secretary of human rights organization «Soldier's mothers of Petersburg»; Sergey Chernov, correspondent of newspaper The St Petersburg Times, Dmitry Zhvanija, freelancer, both is St.-Petersburg. In 2009 - 62, in 2008 - 78, in 2007 - 140, in 2006 — 75.

Threats to journalists and mass-media — 46. Among them: Natalia Chervjakova, editor-in-chief of the newspaper «Vecherny Murmansk»; Pavel Netupsky, correspondent of the Internet newspaper «Fontanka. Ру» (St.-Petersburg); Peter Vasilev, editor-in-chief of the newspaper «Svirskie ogni» (Leningrad region). In 2009 - 60, in 2008 - 35, in 2007 - 27, in 2006 — 43.

Attempts of eviction of editions from occupied premises — 2, among them the newspaper «Krasniye Znamya», Republic Komi. In 2009 - 1, in 2008 - 5, in 2007 - 7, in 2006 — 7.

Refusal to print (distribute) a mass-medium — 24. Among them: the newspaper "Znamya" (Archangelsk region); newspaper «Pravda Severa», Archangelsk, 3 times; newspaper "Svetlogorie", Kaliningrad. In 2009 - 15, in 2008 - 30, in 2007 - 34, in 2006 — 50.

Stopping broadcasting — 12. Among them: city radio in Murmansk; broadcasting company TV BASS, Kaliningrad region. In 2009 - 20, in 2008 - 21, in 2007 - 27, in 2006 — 18.

Closing mass-media — 62. Among them: newspaper «Kurjer Karelii», newspaper "Svetlogorie", Kaliningrad; newspaper "Licey", Karelia. In 2009 - 82, in 2008 - 41, in 2007 - 15, in 2006 — 26.

Withdrawal (buying up, arrest) of circulation — 23. Among them: newspaper «Novie koljosa», Kaliningrad; «Novaya gazeta», Kaliningrad; newspaper «Zarja Timana», Republic Komi; newspaper "Businessman", in Syktyvkar, Republic Komi. In 2009 - 19, in 2008 - 31, in 2007 - 92, in 2006 — 28.

Preventing of activity of Internet editions — 58. In 2009 - 57, in 2008 - 40, in 2007 — 41.

Launching twin-editions — 13. Among them: newspapers «Krasnoje Znamya» and «Zarja Timana», Republic Komi. In 2009 - 2, in 2008 - 13, in 2007 — 14.
